Nuage

Mentored by industry professionals from Electric Theater Collective and Harbor Picture Company, our five person team created a spec commercial for the fictional luxury sheet brand “Nuage” based loosely off of real world company Boll and Branch.

I acted as the only compositor for this project. Each week we had to present our work as a team and encorperate notes from the mentors.

Light group AOVs were utilised to allow control over lighting and exposure in compositing, typically split by Key, Fill, and Environment lights. This allowed for precise post-render control over highlights and the key-to-fill ratio, enabling lighting adjustments without the need for re-renders. Shots were rendered with individual render elements — including Diffuse, Specular, Subsurface, and Transmission — enabling quick adjustments close to the deadline. All defocus and minor denoising were handled in comp. A procedural background tool was developed within compositing and deployed across the majority of shots, allowing for flexible and efficient background generation. Colour matching across all shots became a significant part of the project, with careful attention given to matching the warm, soft, and understated aesthetic of Boll & Branch's established visual style.
