Week 3
I spent a large portion of week 2 on set for a prior committed film shoot (read more about it in my Senior Project Blog), so I was unable to fully focus on the commercial. Despite that I believe my team was able to work in the right direction.
Our notes from the mentors regarding our pitch were very focused on the color palette. Many of our reference images were in a deep saturated pink color that they warned us could very easily appear ugly, cheap, and misrepresent the brand. Additionally they warned us about the live action portion of the woman falling on a CG bed, making the case that it would be a lot of very complex interaction that would be hard to perfect. We where also made aware of the complexity and time required for both of our simulated FX (Clouds and Cloth)
As a group we determined our best way to address these notes. We decided to ditch the idea of the clouds as we felt it would take too much time away from more important aspects of the project and didn’t match the vibe we felt was best. We also looked more towards the brand identity of Boll and Branch. I was able to find a website that contains every televised commercial from the brand. https://www.ispot.tv/brands/nV2/boll-and-branch . This helped us further develop a color palette of more neutral soft colors that I feel represents the product and brand more.
For week 3 we presented our changes to the mentors and received further feedback. The big notes from the work in progress were to emphasize the softness of the bedding “less hospital bed”, make the bed feel more inviting, refining our key to fill ratio (before the live action shoot, and work on camera moves to better showcase the product. They pointed to specific references in our slide deck that they believe we should follow in terms of lighting and also the placement of the sheets.
Going forward this week I want to really work with the team on getting the lighting to the best place possible so that we can lock a date for our live action shoot.
