Week 4
Last week we received a some very specific notes during the critique:
Our key to fill ratio in our lighting was unpleasant and did not match our reference. They specified wanting subtle golden colors.
The sheets (particularly in shot 4) did not feel soft and inviting (“feel like a hospital bed”). They recommended possibly switching to a sculpted comforter.
The camera move for shot 4 did not showcase the best portions of the image, they reminded us that we should be able to pause at any time and be able to see and have a good image.
All of the shots lack a flow to them and feel like individual elements, not a complete piece. They suggested possibly using our cloth in shot 3 as a transition.
They also recommended we push back our live action shoot to give us more time to get the lighting to a good point.
Our first focus for week 3 (as it was the most common thing in our critique) was the lighting. I worked with Emily to examine many of the commercials from Boll and Branch and really find the lighting style they go for. I realized they tend to tend to be mostly lit with a harsh “sun light” and a soft fill light that I assume is mostly bounce light. Below is what we replicated alongside our primary reference.
Cloth sim is NOT final.
During class last Thursday we got access to a microscope. I was able to sit down and photograph some close up images of the fabric swatches we got from the company which Ella was then able to turn into usable image textures.
To address the notes regarding transitions and movement we added subtle camera animation to shots 1 and 2 as well as redo the camera for shot 4.
I have yet to have the chance to do much compositing for this project but I was able venture back into the world of AI rotoscoping. I used Copycat with in nuke to generate a matte from Nidhi’s reference clip. I am not fully happy with the result just yet but it is something I will keep experimenting with.
